Description

Located on the heights of Santa Maria, the Palácio da Galeria is the main hub of the Municipal Museum of Tavira. Inaugurated in 2001 following extensive restoration works, it hosts exhibitions that explore the history, heritage, and contemporary art of the municipality.

Built over the remains of an ancient Phoenician settlement, archaeological excavations at the site uncovered ritual wells dating back to the 7th–6th centuries BCE, linked to the worship of Baal, the god of storms.

Dating back to the 16th century, the building features a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural elements. Its most significant transformation took place in the 18th century, led by the renowned builder Diogo Tavares de Ataíde, commissioned by magistrate João Leal da Gama e Ataíde. Highlights include the Renaissance arcaded courtyard, the Baroque façade, and the painted wooden ceilings.

Classified as a monument of public interest, the Palácio da Galeria is the most iconic civil building in Tavira, enjoying a privileged location overlooking the old town.
